Rumpus Room Dance Workshop
w/ Rachel Tess
Thursday June 25, 2009

5:30-7:30 pm, int/adv level

Co-director of Rumpus Room Dance, Rachel Tess returns to Conduit this summer after a year abroad dancing with the Cullberg Ballet of Sweden. Influenced by her wide range of experiences as a contemporary dancer and creator, this workshop is a unique opportunity for intermediate to advanced level dancers to explore the choreography and creative process of Rumpus Room Dance. The workshop will begin with a thorough warm-up including floor work, structured improvisation and set exercises designed to prepare and enhance the bodies full potential for lyrical, subtle, percussive and explosive movement. The class is designed to connect the body and mind, introducing the possibility for spontaneous creativity and honesty in the interpretation and execution of choreography. Students will put these skills to practice while learning excerpts from Rumpus Room’s repertoire.

Audacious Dancing - Exploring the Dualities of Technique and Performance
w/ Linda K Johnson
T/Th mornings, July 7th-30th; 9:30-11:15a

Drop-in $14, 4 classes $48, Full workshop $85

I have been interested in the Tao Te Ching for many years, often keeping it by my bedside in order to carrying its ideas into my dreaming or waking. I find its poetic presentation of the duality of the natural world and our related humanity very provocative, and have often wondered about exploring its ideas, however abstractly, in a dance and performance context.

The current state of "things" has prompted me to finally set this idea into motion in the form of this workshop. Structured as 8 discreet classes with a connected thread of ideas, this workshop is about exploring both the edges and the center of moving and performing movement. We will dance hard, hardly dance at all, ponder meaning, and perhaps peel back some layers of comfort in order to get to some new places. This class is structured for experienced, intermediate level movers interested in nuancing their approach dancing. If you do not feel that your current abilities meet this expectation but are really interested in this class, please email me and we can explore whether this will be a good fit for you. I am open to making exceptions. lkjdance@earthlink.net

Intermediate Contemporary Technique
w/ Key Turn Project's Aiyana Maye
Thursdays July 23 & 30, 2009

5:30-7:30 pm

Key Turn Project’s traditionally structured technique class (warm-up, center work, across the floor, cool-down) supports students' comfort with using the body in safe, creative and technical ways. A yoga, ballet and contemporary inspired warm-up builds strength, ease of movement and flexibility. Center work will challenge the mind and body to remember phrases of movement, use the whole body for big movements filling up space, expand the understanding and comfort in executing a variety of new dance movements and styles.

Gyrokinesis for Dancers
w/ Sally Garrido Spencer
Thursdays August 6-27, 2009

5:30-6:45 pm, $8/class

Gyrokinesis systematically and gently works the joints and muscles through rhythmic and undulating exercises. Increased functionality supports and invigorates as it re-educates the body to move with fluidity, relaxation and power. In Gyrokinesis, all movement originates from the spine and follows the natural energy lines in the body to build internal and external strength. Sally is a certified instructor of Gyrotonic, a dancer and an apprentice teacher of Gyrokinesis.

Contemporary Dance for Teens and Adults (14 years and up)
Special Workshop Series w/ James Healy
August 21-23, 2008
2-4 pm, Friday-Sunday
$14 drop-in, $40 for the series

James Healey, from New York City, returns to the Portland area with a three day workshop for intermediate and advanced dancers.

James will incorporate contemporary movement concepts that include floor movement and standing phrase work. Explorations in these classes will draw focus to internal sensory awareness, such as breath, bones, blood, and alignment, as well as external sensory awareness as the dancer relates to the space and other dancers within it. This class is modern/contemporary based, and James will draw from his current experience and research as faculty of the American Dance Festival, Governor's School of North Carolina, and outreach programs through Shen Wei Dance Arts (NYC). James was a founding member and Rehearsal Director for Shen Wei Dance Arts until Spring 2009, and is currently a guest artist for the company.
